How to extract an icon form an application (using IcoFX)

IcoFX (http://icofx.ro) is a very powerful icon editor that can be used to create and modify icon files.
It also can be used to extract icons form applications.

Normally IcoFX must be installed, but there is also a portable version available that can be used without having to install it (nothing will be modified on your system).
Here we describe the usage of the portable version only.

    Installation (Portable Version)

Just download the portable version from the following website:
    https://portableapps.com/apps/graphics_pictures/icofx_portable

    Double click the downloaded file.
The assistant will now prompt you for a folder, where the portable application will be copied to.
This can be any folder of your choice like (like C:\temp\IcoFX) but also an USB device.

    Note:
The installer will place some files in this folder directly, so you should create a separate folder named "IcoFX".

    Starting IcoFX Portable

Just double click the file IcoFXPortable in the folder where you have unpacked IcoFX (like C:\temp\IcoFX).

    Extracting an Icon

Before you can extract an icon from an application you have to find out where the application is stored.
Most applications are stored in the folders:

    C:\Program Files C:\Program Files (x86)

Search in these folders for the name of your application.

To extract an icon perform the following steps in IcoFX:

    0_1528659595711_Tutorial_Extract-Icon_IcoFX_Step-1_Select_App.png

Click on the Open button Select Windows Binary in the field File Type Navigate in the folder structure to the folder where the application is stored and select the application Click on the Open button

    0_1528659605175_Tutorial_Extract-Icon_IcoFX_Step-2_Select_Icon.png

Now select the icon you want to extract
Some applications have multiple icons stored, here you have to select the icon that is also shown on your desktop or in your start menu.
This should normally be the top-left icon in the list.

    Click on the Button Extract

    0_1528659612548_Tutorial_Extract-Icon_IcoFX_Step-3_Save_Icon.png

Now you see the selected icon in the editor of IcoFX.
The icon is available in multiple sizes (marked with a red square in the image above).

Click on the Button Save and save the icon in a folder of your choice.

    Now you can

send us the icon via email (tom [at] vulndetect [dot] com) or attach the icon to a forums posting

    Thank you for your help!

    @OLLI_S Lots of good ideas.
The first one, that about excluding drives or folders, is getting a lot closer. I don't have a date yet, but we will soon make the final decision about how it should be implemented in the backend and then it shouldn't be long before there will be a UI component for it too.

    @Tom
Should we use the word Build (that is what users see in the app).
Or should we use release (like in the release notes, but this might confuse the user)

@Anselm Yes, that is why I think this is an interesting case. We have some apps that we need to handle in other ways than pulling info from the files. So this is a bit of an experiment.

I will discuss this with my colleague tomorrow.

    Thank you

The primary issue is that you are too fast 😉

New versions need a Specific Rule, in some cases you can't see this, because the version number in the file is the same as the one on the site, but in other cases like FreeCommander, we need to rewrite it. The unknown versions are added automatically to our to do list and are usually added within a working day.

But this 790 releases might cause a headache, because now I added it as "public", but this time the "donor" is also at 790, so I guess @OLLI_S will complain soon 😄

@Tom My plan was: as long as my company is using Windows 7, i will not move to a newer version. I do not like to learn twice. And i do not like to be alpha private tester of Microsoft.

@Tom The officially version number displayed in the Star Citizen Launcher is Star Citizen Alpha 3.4.1
    Details see here: https://robertsspaceindustries.com/comm-link//16920-Star-Citizen-Alpha-341
So please call the product Star Citizen and set the version number to Alpha 3.4.1

I know it is complicated to find a solution that fits all products.
But I would use the version number displayed in the app in Help -> About

For PSPad I see the version number 5.0.1 (312) and this is exactly what is shown in the application.
So the issue seems to be solved.

    @Tom I have a solution!

In the list of apps I have for example:

    SUMo (Beta) Vortex (Beta)

If you now add the 32-Bit and 64-Bit classification in brackets behind the product name then you would get:

SUMo (Beta) (32-Bit) Vortex (Beta) (64-Bit)

    This is looking strange!

If you remove the brackets at "Beta" then you would get:

SUMo Beta (32-Bit) Vortex Beta (64-Bit)

This is not a good solution, because now it seems like the text "Beta" belongs to the application name.

    Solution
So I suggest that you display the Alpha and Beta information in the version number.
    So you would have:

Application SUMo (32-Bit) version number Beta 5.9.0.418 Application Vortex (64-Bit) version number Beta 0.17.7

This is in my eyes the best solution!
